The local chamber of commerce met for the time in March 1913, choosing Stern and Goodman Store Manager Harry Ray as president, adopting the theme "Boost Brea". Their meeting place was at Sewell Hall. One of the county's largest and most active chambers back then, the group coined Brea's slogan: "City of Oil, Oranges and Opportunity". Although the chamber had been in existence since the early part of the century, it wasn't until 1945 that the organization's leaders decided it was time to adopt formal bylaws, file articles of incorporation, and hire a full-time staff. The Brea Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2003.
