Chairman of the Board John Koos awards two Brea Olinda High School Students on June 1st
BREA, CA. – The Brea Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the winners of our annual Business Vision scholarship awards. On June 1st, 2017, Brea Olinda High School hosted their annual senior awards night. This year, the Brea Chamber saw two outstanding students that stood out during the application process. The purpose of the Brea Chamber of Commerce Business Vision Award is to provide financial assistance to prestigious graduating high school seniors from the Brea Olinda Unified School District.
“The Brea Chamber of Commerce is a proud partner of the school district. It was an honor to present these commendable young women with scholarships to help jumpstart their education leading to their career goals. The Brea Chamber of Commerce strives to give back to the community. With these students heading off to continue their journey in education, may they find their way back to home, making the next generation in Brea brighter than ever,” said Chairman of the Board, John Koos.
This year’s $1,000 scholarship winner is Sofia Anaya, a freshman entering Loyola Marymount University, majoring in Business Administration. Sofia has a passion for dance and was involved in many leadership opportunities provided by her church. With a very busy schedule, she persevered in her education
receiving an overall weighted GPA of over 4.0. Starting her school days at 5:30 AM along with working several hours a week at her church youth ministry, she has displayed her hard work and determination for success to everyone that surrounds her. Peers say she’s always prepared and eager to help.
“I would just like to say I am deeply honored to have been a recipient of this scholarship and I hope to pay it forward by returning to my hometown of Brea to work and give back to the community,” said Sofia Anaya.
The Brea Chamber is also thrilled to announce the winner of its annual $500 scholarship, Evelyn Torres, in recognition of an aspiring high school senior currently enrolled in a North Orange County Regional
Occupational (ROP) course within the Brea Olinda Unified School District. The Chamber commends the ROP program and the invaluable opportunities provided to students, efficiently preparing participants with skills necessary for immediate workforce entry. Evelyn Torres will begin her college education at Fullerton College with a plan to transfer with a major in Kinesiology. While spending most of her time taking care of her family, Evelyn was able to complete over 100 volunteer hours with her school. She worked under the supervision of the Athletic Training Director and aspires to be a Physical Therapist.
Evelyn Torres stated, “Winning the scholarship means very much to me because I am a first-generation college student. With the constant encouragement and support from my family, I am able to pursue a higher education to become a Physical Therapist.”
